Conductor David Brophy
Mezzo Soprano Sarah Richmond
Conductor David Brophy makes a welcome return to the Ulster Orchestra for a concert which starts at dusk in an Athenian forest, traces a Romantic sunset and ends with the start of a brand new musical day!
Il Tramonto is considered one of Respighi’s greatest masterpieces, written for mezzo soprano and string quartet/string orchestra in 1914. It is a setting of the poem The Sunset by Percy Bysshe Shelley, a story of young love cut short by tragedy - he dies in the night and she lives on in grief, looking after her aged father. Respighi creates a mini-opera in which the soloist leads us through all the emotions of the poem – your guide on this occasion will be Sarah Richmond, hailing from Carrickfergus and winner of The Toronto Mozart Vocal Competition.

Irish National Opera - Conscience in Rupture
Irish National Opera exists to transform opera in Ireland and is making 2020 a year to remember for positive reasons, placing opera at the heart of Irish creative life.
As a creative response to the challenges of the global pandemic, INO are turning the spotlight onto the breadth and depth of Irish operatic talent.
20 Shots of Opera will energise Ireland’s opera community by creating significant employment for composers, singers, musicians, directors, designers and technical personnel at this most difficult time.
Sometimes we are our own worst enemy . . . We fall victim to a conscience poisoned by society's repressing landscape. A rupture occurs within ourselves – the timeless fight between good and evil.

Bizet's Le Docteur Miracle for Wexford Festival Opera
The Merrion Hotel, Dublin, work in partnership with Wexford Festival Opera to present 'Opera in the Garden'. Sarah featured in the inaugural show directed by Roberto Recchia, and is delighted to return for their second. This year's production is Bizet's (1838-1875) Le Docteur Miracle.
Georges Bizet has long been a victim of his own success. Posthumous success, that is, because his greatest opera, Carmen, was famously a flop at its premiere just three months before his death in 1875. But there is much more to him operatically. In addition to his popular Les Pêcheurs de perles, there are six other operas. Bizet was just 18 when he composed Le Docteur Miracle, and if it unsurprisingly lacks musical originality it is nevertheless a little gem, almost resembling a foreshortened amalgam of Rossini’s Barbiere and Donizetti’s Elisir. Indeed, at every turn, Le Docteur Miracle shows how remarkably well the young composer had already mastered comic style.
Bizet was nearing the end of his student career – soon to be capped by winning the Prix de Rome – when he entered a comic-opera competition organised by Offenbach in 1856. A distinguished jury whittled down the 78 entrants to six finalists, each of whom was given the same libretto (by Leon Battu and Ludovic Halévy, based on the Richard Brinsley Sheridan farce St Patrick’s Day), and eventually, Bizet and Charles Lecocq were declared joint winners of the first prize. Libretto by Léon Battu and Ludovic Halévy. First performance 9 April 1857, Bouffes-Parisiens, Paris. Successful performances followed at Offenbach’s theatre, the Bouffes-Parisiens, before Le Docteur Miracle disappeared for almost a century.
Where Le Docteur Miracle is surely unique is in boasting an amusing ‘omelette quartet’, in which Bizet enjoys playing with the rhythms of the words ‘Voici l'omelette’ and which features mock-heroic invocations to a poorly cooked omelette that both tastes and smells horrible. In best comic tradition, the ‘servant’ – actually the disguised suitor of the mayor’s daughter – who made the omelette is sent off, and gets his revenge by announcing that the omelette was poisoned and that the only person with a cure is a certain…Dr Miracle.
The Magic Flute - Mozart’s enchanting final opera. His most popular stage work. A timeless moral tale in a world of clashing cultures.
Sung in German with English surtitles
Trials of courage and love. A journey that encounters serpents and magic interventions. The dark realm of the vocally virtuosic Queen of the Night struggles against the judgement and reason of Sarastro, high priest of Isis and Osiris. In between, a separated couple cope with trials and rituals, and Papageno, a humble birdcatcher, searches for a wife.
Combining music, amazing live operatic voices, bright colours, textures, bubbles and finger puppets, Little Lullabies is an ideal first musical experience for babies and parents in the fun and relaxed environment of the ISLAND Studio Theatre. The event is suitable for babies and toddlers between the ages of 0–24 months and their parents/guardians.
Babies will join Northern Ireland Opera singers on the The Rainbow Boat for an adventure through the music of some of opera’s best loved stories.

Mark Good Friday in a poignant and dramatic way by joining us for the annual Tenebrae Service in Portico. This year, Flora Montgomery will read, in “Shadows” (or instalments), the story of Christ’s journey from the Garden of Gethsemane to his crucifixion at Golgotha. Interspersed between the shadows the choir and soloists will sing the Saint Saens Requiem. After each shadow has been read the lights are dimmed a little until, as at the crucifixion, we are plunged into darkness and the great strepitus sounds to mimic the earthquake of that momentous event.
An atmospheric service including Saint-Saens Requiem with orchestra and organ, led by Neil McClure.

Suzuki in Madama Butterfly at the NCH
Breathtakingly beautiful from first love to tragic end – Madama Butterfly is arguably Puccini’s most heart rending and best loved opera. The dramatic tale of East meets West is set in the mysterious world of the Japanese geisha, a world of red silk and rituals, imbued with fragile beauty. Cio-Cio San is only fifteen when Pinkerton, a visiting American Captain, acquires her as a bride. Their love burns brightly for a while and the delicate Butterfly is caught in the flame. Within a year, he is gone, and his promises to return hold little value. But Madama Butterfly knows, although betrayed - in her heart that one fine day, he will return. The story reaches its tragic conclusion as Pinkerton returns to break her heart. Butterfly is devastated and makes a supreme sacrifice, in devotion to her ancestors.
Lyric Opera revives its classic and timeless production of Madama Butterfly with a new conductor and cast featuring the best of Irish & International artists. Korean Soprano, Hye-Youn Lee one of The Independent on Sunday’s ‘Faces to Watch’ in 2013 makes her Lyric Opera and Dublin debut in this demanding title role. English tenor, Julian Hubbard and Irish mezzo Sarah Richmond make their role debuts as Pinkerton and Suzuki. Joining them is German based American baritone, Lucia Lucas who sings the role of Sharpless, the US Consul.
Conductor John Rigby leads the Lyric Opera Orchestra and Chorus in this most beautiful opera that resonates deeply despite being composed over 100 years ago. Artistic Director Vivian Coates creates an elegant and atmospheric production which is beautifully staged, lit and costumed, giving a richly emotional experience.

Madam Popova in Walton's The Bear
Extravaganza in one act to a libretto by Paul Dehn and Walton after a vaudeville by Anton Chekhov. First performed in Aldeburgh, Jubilee Hall, 3 June 1967
One of Walton’s late works, The Bear is small of scale when
compared with his previous and only other opera. Troilus and Cressida
had been a huge undertaking with a large cast, full orchestra and
chorus, and one that had met with mostly tepid responses. So it was
little surprise that when commissioned by the Koussevitzky Foundation to
write an opera (eventually dedicated ‘to the memory of Serge and
Natalie Koussevitzky’) he produced a compact threehander. Perhaps it
was that great conductor’s Russian background that inspired Walton to
turn to Chekhov as the source for The Bear.
First heard at the 1967 Aldeburgh Festival, The Bear
exhibits the same tenderness and bittersweet lyricism which had always
been central to the composer’s style. It is also full of the absurd
humour that had been a trait right from Walton’s first major work,
Façade. His music captures the Chekhovian spirit of a piece set in the
Russian provinces in the late nineteenth century. The central character
is Madam Popova, the young widow of a landowner who moves from obsessive
bereavement to fiery independence, complaining along the way of her
husband’s infidelities. She is visited by one of Popov’s creditors, the
tempestuous Smirnov, and when they begin to quarrel – she calls him a
bear and a boor – pistols are drawn, but they find themselves unable to
fire; they realise they have fallen in love. Observing all the action
with bemusement is Popova’s manservant, Luka. The librettist in charge
of putting Chekhov on the English operatic stage was Paul Dehn, best
known as an Oscarwinning screenwriter. Thanks to Walton’s light and
sometimes parodistic music, his words never fail to register.

Witch in Iford Arts New Production of Verdi's Macbeth
Verdi was fascinated by Shakespeare. He focused minutely and up close
up on Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, a couple both deeply flawed and deeply
human. And he charts with characteristic empathy the timeless conflict
between ambition and conscience which lies at the story’s heart,
creating one of the finest scores of his early period. Shakespeare’s
bizarre ‘weird sisters’ inspired him further to create delicious music
which is extraordinarily suggestive of the supernatural as the third
element which drives the fast-paced narrative.

Willie in Guglielmo Ratcliff at Wexford Opera
Pietro Mascagni's Guglielmo Ratcliff will be conducted by Francesco Cilluffo and directed by Fabio Ceresa at Wexford Festival Opera. Sarah performs the role of Willie. Set design by Tiziano Santi and costume design by Giuseppe Palella.
Mascagni was captivated by the young Scottish romantic anti-hero of Heine's play Wilhelm Ratcliff, and he began composing his opera Guglielmo Ratcliff (translated into Italian) in 1882 whilst a student in Milan but laid it aside in order to compose Cavalleria rusticana for a competition. He won the competition, triumphing over seventy-two other entries, and Cavalleria rusticana made his name as a composer. Cavalleria rusticana is clearly anticipated in the music of Guglielmo Ratcliff,
particularly in the atmospheric orchestral writing, full-blooded
melodies and dramatic pace. The role of Guglielmo Ratcliff has the
reputation of being one of the most demanding ever written for a tenor.
The opera is set in northern Scotland and concerns the tragic
consequences of broken relationships in two generations. Maria MacGregor
rejected Guglielmo Ratcliff as a husband but he is determined that
no-one else shall marry her and challenges other suitors to duels,
killing two of them. As Maria prepares to marry Count Douglas she learns
that her mother and Guglielmo’s father had loved each other. However,
her mother changed her mind and married MacGregor. The erstwhile lovers
later resumed their relationship, but Maria’s father, MacGregor, killed
Guglielmo’s father out of jealousy and Maria’s mother died of a broken
heart. Guglielmo is haunted by the ghosts of the men he has killed and
in his final delirium he kills Maria, her father and himself.
First performed at the Teatro alla Scala, Milan on 16 February 1895.
Libretto based on Andrea Maffei’s Italian translation of the play Wilhelm Ratcliff by Heinrich Heine.
A short introductory talk will be given in the Jerome Hynes Theatre an hour before the performance.
Date: 8pm Thurs 22nd, 5pm Sun 25th, 8pm Wed 28th, 8pm Sat 31st October

Inside Opera: Live
Seven of the UK’s opera companies have joined forces to produce Inside Opera: Live, a unique online event offering unprecedented behind the scenes access and insight into the opera being created and performed in theatres across the country.
In a collaboration, the scope of which is a first for the arts, the Companies – English National Opera, English Touring Opera, Northern Ireland Opera, Opera North, The Royal Opera, Scottish Opera, and Welsh National Opera – will come together on 10 May 2014 as part of a Europe-wide celebration of opera.
Designed for anyone who is new to opera, but with obvious appeal for
opera fans, this ambitious event will be hosted on YouTube. It combines
live streamed and filmed footage to give viewers a chance to experience
opera across the UK from the inside, and encourages them to find out
about the opera activity on their doorstep.
Hosted from the Grand Theatre in Leeds as Opera North prepares for matinee and evening performances of Puccini’s La bohème, it
will air specially commissioned behind the scenes films from all the
participating companies, live interviews with singers and directors, and
live links to rehearsals, backstage and community-based activities.
In the course of a packed afternoon, viewers will have the chance to
hear from performers just before they go on stage; find out how a singer
prepares for a new role; meet the people behind an opera production and
learn what they do; see what it takes to make and take an opera out on
tour; and understand the skill that goes into making a period costume.
Throughout the event there will also be the opportunity using
#insideopera to put questions live via Twitter to the companies’
artistic directors.
Opera productions on stage in the UK on European Opera Days weekend
include some of the best loved works in the repertoire, such as Mozart’s
The Marriage of Figaro and The Magic Flute, Puccini’s Tosca, La bohème and Madama Butterfly, and Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier.
Inside Opera:Live can be seen on YouTube from 2pm - 6pm on Saturday 10 May 2014 at www.youtube.com/insideopera

Voices of Ireland celebrate St Patrick's Day
Downpatrick Cathedral welcomes John Anderson and The Voices of Ireland who
will be giving a recital in honour of our national saint. With their
special guest, the distinguished actor BJ Hogg, they will be presenting
words and music to celebrate St Patrick's Day.
The programme, which lasts about an hour and a quarter, is a lovely
blend of sacred and secular music, ranging from popular songs of today
to some of the most beautiful and best loved Irish (and Northern Irish)
melodies ever written. The music is interwoven with short readings of
words old and new, including some of the words of St Patrick himself,
like The Deer‘s Cry.
Voices of Ireland comprises 16 of the very best
singers from Northern Ireland. Many of them are well known soloists in
their own right whilst others have sung with some of the great choirs of
the UK and Ireland. Their passion is to present the highest quality
choral singing in a repertoire that is exclusively Irish and
particularly Northern Irish. 'Danny Boy' and 'You Raise Me Up' are
alongside the great sacred Irish melodies like 'Slane (Be Thou My
Vision, O Lord of my Heart)'. The timeless beauty of a Thomas Moore
song like 'Endearing Young Charms' sits alongside a great traditional
Irish melody with WB Yeats' words, The Salley Gardens.

Sheffield Symphony Orchestra joins with Sterndale Singers and Sheffield Chamber Choir to perform Mahler's Symphony No. 2. A work of youthful inspiration, Mahler's Second Symphony never fails to stir even the sternest of concertgoers. Capturing the imagination of the public for the better part of a century, the Resurrection Symphony exhibits all of Mahler's unmistakeable voice: his vibrant orchestration; his attention to detail; his marshalling of massive musical forces; and - perhaps first and foremost - his probing explorations of the very human conditions of life, death and whatever comes after.
Sir Mark Elder CBE conducting A Midsummer Night's Dream
Carl Maria von Weber Overture to Oberon Igor Stravinsky Concerto in E flat, 'Dumbarton Oaks' Claude Debussy Syrinx Felix Mendelssohn A Midsummer Night's Dream (complete) Op 21 and 61 The RNCM Chamber Orchestra is joined by the Halle's Music Director Sir Mark Elder CBE for this stunning programme, to raise funds for Future Talent, a charity founded and directed by HRH The Duchess of Kent, the RNCM's founding President and a strong advocate for music education in the UK. Oberon heralds tonight's concert in the overture to Weber's opera, which makes way for one of Stravinsky's most exhilarating chamber scores. We then mark the Summer solstice with a complete performance of incidental music by Mendelssohn, written to accompany a performance of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. Rarely performed complete, this music beautifully captures the elfin atmosphere of Shakespeare's play, providing an evocative series of musical tableaux, linked together by narrated extracts from Shakespeare's play.

Ariadne auf Naxos Richard Strauss
Sarah will perform the role of Composer in the RNCM's January operatic excerpts fully staged production of Strauss'Ariadne auf Naxos. Directed by Garth Bardsley.
Vienna, 18th century. In the house of a rich man, preparations are in progress for the performance of a new opera seria, Ariadne auf Naxos. The major-domo enters to inform the music master that immediately after the opera an Italian comedy will be performed, followed by a fireworks display in the garden. The outraged music master replies that the composer, his young pupil, will never tolerate that, but the major-domo is unimpressed by his objections and leaves. When the composer appears, hoping for a last-minute rehearsal, a disdainful servant tells him that the musicians are still playing dinner music. Suddenly the tenor rushes from his dressing room, arguing with the wigmaker. The prima donna furiously comments on the presence of the comedy troupe and their leading lady, Zerbinetta. In the middle of the confusion, the major-domo returns with an announcement: in order for the fireworks to begin on time, the opera and the comedy are to be performed simultaneously.
General consternation soon gives way to practical reactions. The dancing master suggests cutting the operas score. The music master persuades the despairing composer to do so, while the two lead singers independently urge him to abridge the others part. Meanwhile, Zerbinetta gives her troupe a briefing on the operas plot. Ariadne, they are told, has been abandoned by her lover Theseus on the island of Naxos, where she now waits for death. Zerbinetta, however, claims that all Ariadne really needs is a new lover. When the composer vehemently disagrees, Zerbinetta begins to flirt with him. Suddenly the young man finds new hope. Filled with love and enthusiasm for his work, he passionately declares music the greatest of all the arts (Musik ist eine heilige Kunst). But when he catches sight of the comedians, ready to go on stage, he realizes with horror what he has agreed to. He blames the music master for the artistic debacle and runs off.

Sarah will perform the role of Rosetta in the RNCM's January opera excerpts fully staged production of Massenet's Manon. Directed by Stefan Janski.
ACT I. France, 1721. In the courtyard of an inn at Amiens, a crowd awaits arrival of the coach. Guillot, an elderly roué, and his wealthy friend Brétigny have ordered dinner for three actresses of easy virtue, Poussette, Javotte and Rosette; as they retire to a room, a young officer, Lescaut, comes to meet his cousin Manon, who is on her way to a convent. The coach soon arrives and with it Manon, who excitedly tells Lescaut about her first trip away from home. While he looks after her luggage, Guillot, calling for more wine, notices the pretty girl and flirts with her, but she only laughs at the elderly man's advances. Lescaut returns, and before joining friends at a gaming table he warns Manon about talking to strangers. To herself, she wistfully compares her own bland future with the pleasure-filled life of Guillot and his glamorous companions. The Chevalier Des Greiux arrives at the inn and, on seeing Manon, falls in love with her. Seizing this opportunity to escape the convent, Manon suggests that they run off to Paris in Guillot's coach. The tipsy old bon vivant, who had intended to abduct Manon himself, stumbles from the inn just in time to hurl curses after the escaping lovers.

Set on a large, isolated country estate during a seemingly perpetual winter, Gian Carlo Menottis libretto has overtones of Ibsen, the psychodrama playing out against music that is at once elegant yet fraught with tension.
